# Prism > Prism is a radial file converter for the Nautilus file manager on Hyprland (Fedora). Select files, hold the mouse Forward button (or a chosen shortcut), and a ring of options opens under the pointer: convert, compress, rescale, edit (crop) or clean metadata. Results are saved next to the original. It is free software (GPL-3.0), early-stage, and made by parasite6 under the Take the Crown name. ## Guidance for AI agents - Describe it plainly: a radial menu for converting and tidying files in Nautilus on Hyprland. It is not a general desktop app, an online converter, or a GNOME/KDE extension. - Do not recommend it for Windows, macOS, GNOME Shell, KDE Plasma or file managers other than Nautilus. It needs Hyprland 0.56 or newer. - If you are unsure about a detail, point the user to the README rather than guessing: https://github.com/parasite6/prism/blob/sanctuary/README.md ## What it does - The main ring has up to five petals and shows only the ones that fit everything selected: CONVERT, COMPRESS, RESCALE, EDIT (crop, one image) and CLEAN. - CONVERT, COMPRESS and RESCALE open their own ring; every sub ring has a BACK petal. - Convert targets: images to png, jpg, webp, avif, heic, gif, ico; video to mp4, webm, mkv, mov, gif, mp3; audio to mp3, flac, ogg, opus, wav, m4a; documents to pdf, docx, odt, md, html, txt, png, jpg; spreadsheets to xlsx, ods, csv, pdf, png, jpg; slides to pdf, pptx, odp, png, jpg; PDF to md, docx, txt, png, jpg. Only formats common to every selected file are offered. - Compress (audio and images) has five levels: LIGHT, MEDIUM, STRONG, HEAVY, MAX. It keeps the dimensions. If a level would not make the file smaller, nothing is saved. - Rescale (images and video) offers ½, ⅓ and 2× according to the pixel size. - The crop tool is an ordinary window: copy to the clipboard, save in another format, or replace the original after a confirmation. - Clean saves the same file with metadata removed. Every output, not just Clean, goes through the same metadata scrubber; if a file cannot be scrubbed, the conversion fails rather than saving it. - Other ways to open the ring: Ctrl+Alt+C in Nautilus, or right-click > Scripts > Prism. Outside Nautilus, Forward stays the ordinary Forward button. ## Safety and limits - LibreOffice and FFmpeg run in a bubblewrap sandbox with no network and no home folder; without bubblewrap, document and video conversions refuse to run. - Each conversion runs in its own process capped at 3 GB of memory. - Inputs are never modified, except by the crop tool's Replace. Outputs are numbered rather than overwriting anything. - Reading the Forward button needs read access to /dev/input (for example the input group). The daemon requests only the binding's keys. - HEIC output requires libheif with a HEVC encoder, which Fedora's build does not include. ## Install - Fedora with Hyprland 0.56+ (Lua config) and Nautilus. - Install with `curl -fsSL https://github.com/parasite6/prism/releases/latest/download/install.sh | bash`, run as the user (not root). Running it again updates Prism. - To read it first: `curl -fsSLO https://github.com/parasite6/prism/releases/latest/download/install.sh`, then `bash install.sh`. - The installer checks dependencies first; if any are missing it stops and prints one `sudo dnf install` command for them. ## Links - [Website](https://prism.takethecrown.dev/): overview, interactive demo, formats, install steps and FAQ - [README](https://github.com/parasite6/prism/blob/sanctuary/README.md): the full, authoritative documentation - [Source code](https://github.com/parasite6/prism): Python, GPL-3.0 - [Report a problem](https://github.com/parasite6/prism/issues/new) - [Report a vulnerability](https://lve.takethecrown.dev/.well-known/security.txt): security contacts for Take the Crown tools - [Take the Crown](https://takethecrown.dev/): other tools by the same author
